Position: Communications Director

Job Description

The Communications Director is responsible for all communication materials for ARTSIDEOUT with the University of Toronto and neighbouring community. Communication materials include press releases, cross-promotions, and seeking relationship opportunities with media outlets in the school and in the community. They must work closely with the Marketing Director of Branding and Social Media Coordinator to create a marketing strategy for the festival. They also work very closely with the Outreach team to establish, build, and maintain relationships with on- and off-campus organizations and groups. Communications experience is a strong asset.

 

Responsibilities

  • Aid in actively seeking opportunities and relationships with the university and local community for the marketing of ARTSIDEOUT;
  • Manage media relations, research editorial opportunities and build relationship with the university and local community media outlets;
  • Prepare and deliver monthly newsletters for the mailing list listserve, as well as to UTSC staff and community partners;
  • Work with current community partners on cross promotion;
  • Prepare a critical timeline in the first months of the work contract, outlining tasks, events, and deadlines pertaining to the Communications Director role;
  • Develop and maintain the marketing budget, reporting expenses to the Financial Officer;
  • Collaborate and report to the General Manager and Artistic Director to ensure the theme, vision, mission, and values of the festival are well represented;
  • Work closely with and oversee tasks of the Social Media Coordinator in creating and maintaining a consistent ARTSIDEOUT written and visual brand identity across all media releases and that proper contact be made with the public;
  • Communicate and work with the Branding Director to unify marketing strategies and share resources;
  • Collaborate closely with the Outreach Team and Clubs Director in delivering an effective marketing strategy for outreach and partnership projects throughout the year;
  • Performing minimal research to analyze marketing trends, including Facebook likes and post reach, Twitter reach, etc.
  • Prepare and deliver the VIP event during the festival to demonstrate appreciation of UTSC staff and community members (invite MPs, UTSC Principal and staff members who helped deliver event, sponsors, etc.)
  • Write press releases;
  • Ensure that ARTSIDEOUT is present in various recruitment events in the tricampus (e.g. Get Started, Orientation/FROSH, Clubs Week);
  • Attend Executive Committee meetings and provide timely reports/updates to the Executive Committee regarding external outreach;
  • Deliver a detailed final report after the event, outlining quantitative and qualitative data pertaining to the process of outreaching to partners

 

Qualifications

  • Strong time-management, communication, and organizational skills are highly important
  • Experience in communications or delivering marketing campaigns is a very strong asset
  • Must have strong public speaking and written skills
  • Must be familiar with social media applications (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram)
  • Familiarity with web development platforms (i.e. Wordpress) is a strong asset
  • Able to work with critical deadlines, must be able to manage a number of different projects at the same time
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as work with others in a team-based setting
  • Demonstrated strong interest/eagerness to work with people from various walks of life, and learn about Scarborough’s rich and diverse arts and culture scene
  • Experience in event planning and/or organization is an asset, but not required

 

Working Conditions

  • Work contract: February 2018 to end of October 2018
  • February to August will consist of monthly team meetings and socials; September will consist of weekly meetings up to the day of ARTSIDEOUT; Additional meetings with other departments and General Manager
  • Expected to attend executive workshops including, but not limited to: Financial Literacy, Intro to Google Accounts, Anti-Oppression Workshops
  • Expected to attend at least 3 Outreach events throughout the year
  • Work-from-home with hours between 4-5 hours/week
  • Availability during summer months is highly important
  • Flexible availability during September to the day of the festival is mandatory
