Position: Performance Director

Job Description

The Performance Director is responsible for performance submissions/projects from both the Music and Theatre department. Reporting to the Artistic Director, and working with the Logistics Coordinators, the Performance Director will contribute in shaping the theme of ARTSIDEOUT 2018. Given the live nature of performances, the role demands the knowledge of AV/sound and constantly checking/ensuring that performances carry through and operates on schedule. The Performance Director is also responsible for the coordination of ARTSIDEOUT After Dark, which will be designed alongside with the Executive Assistant and Artistic Assistant.

 

Responsibilities

  • Is experienced/well-versed in AV/Sound to apply relevant knowledge into practice across different applications and areas (including training volunteers);
  • Prepare a critical timeline in the first months of the work contract, outlining tasks, events, and deadlines pertaining to the Performance Director role;
  • Liaise with the relevant programs at all three University of Toronto Campuses, and directly encourage artists to submit performances for ARTSIDEOUT;
  • Attend relevant tri-campus arts events to seek out potential performances that align with ARTSIDEOUT’s theme;
  • Attend class critiques at the UTSC campus to seek out potential performances that align with ARTSIDEOUT’s theme;
  • Be in communication with ACM faculty for recommendations of student artists;
  • Maintain regular communication with artists; responsibility includes frequently checking and responding to the Submission email, and forwarding relevant emails to appropriate departments;
  • Work with the submissions team (Directors and Coordinators of Studio, Special Projects, Logistics) in jurying submissions for acceptance into ARTSIDEOUT;
  • Work with the Volunteer team and ACM faculty to provide the necessary training for volunteers to operate Performances on the day of the festival;
  • Create an overall vision for the stages, ensuring viewer perception and understanding of ARDSIDEOUT’s theme;
  • Develop and maintain the performance and logistics budget, reporting expenses to the Financial Officer;
  • Attend Executive Team meetings and provide timely reports/updates to the Executive Team regarding Performance initiatives and submissions;
  • Deliver a detailed final report outlining quantitative and qualitative data pertaining to your role in ARTSIDEOUT

 

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and organizational skills are required
  • Time-management abilities and an independent work ethic are important in the success of this role
  • Experience working with AV/sound and possessing its relevant knowledge and applications are essential
  • Experience in having a ASO volunteer position is as asset, but not required
  • Experience in event planning and/or organization is an asset, but not required
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as work with others in a team-based setting
  • Demonstrated strong interest/eagerness to work with people from various walks of life, and learn about Scarborough’s rich and diverse arts and culture scene

 

Working Conditions

  • Work contract: February 2018 to end of October 2018
  • February to August will consist of monthly team meetings and socials; September will consist of weekly meetings up to the day of ARTSIDEOUT; Additional meetings with other departments and Artistic Director
  • Expected to attend executive workshops including, but not limited to: Financial Literacy, Intro to Google Accounts, Anti-Oppression Workshops
  • Expected to attend at least 3 Outreach events throughout the year
  • Work-from-home with hours between 4-5 hours/week
  • Availability during summer months is highly important
  • Flexible availability during September to the day of the festival is mandatory
