Position: Studio Director

Job Description

The Studio Director will work closely with the Artistic Director, to recruit and curate studio projects during the event. This role demands time management and organizational skills, as many administrative responsibilities depend on the final decisions of artistic projects. The Studio Director should also possess communication skills, to constantly communicate with and update participating artists to follow deadlines. The Studio Director will ensure all exhibitions are successful, while negotiating curatorial decisions with the Performance staffs.

 

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a critical timeline in the first months of the work contract, outlining tasks, events, and deadlines pertaining to the Studio Director role;
  • Liaise with the Studio programs at all three University of Toronto Campuses, and directly encourage artists to submit works for ARTSIDEOUT;
  • Attend relevant tri-campus arts events to seek out potential works that align with ARTSIDEOUT’s theme;
  • Attend class critiques at the UTSC campus to seek out potential works that align with ARTSIDEOUT’s theme;
  • Be in communication with ACM faculty for recommendations of student artists;
  • Maintain a database in coordinating all incoming submissions;
  • Work alongside the submissions team (Directors and Coordinators of Performance, Special Projects, Logistics) in jurying submissions for acceptance into ARTSIDEOUT;
  • Take responsibility for maintaining regular communication with artists; responsibility includes frequently checking and responding to the Studio email, and forwarding relevant emails to appropriate departments;
  • Build relationships with the artists, to ensure their submissions arrive on scheduled dates
  • Act as curator in making decisions on the placement of works, ensuring viewer perception and delivery of ARTSIDEOUT 2018’s theme;
  • Create, print and install wall labels for individual artworks, ensuring all information is correct;
  • Work with the Studio Logistics Coordinator to follow installation guidelines aligned with the protocols set by facilities management and health & safety;
  • Prepare a kit with list of works and maps for judging panel and liase with judges on event day;
  • Develop and maintain the studio budget, reporting expenses to the Financial Officer;
  • Develop a curatorial statement to be included in the program;
  • Provide the Marketing team with artist names, artwork titles, and curatorial layout details to ensure the final ARTSIDEOUT program contains the correct information for studio submissions;
  • Work with the Marketing team to ensure adequate documentation of all artworks;
  • Attend Executive Team meetings and provide timely reports/updates to the Executive Team regarding Studio initiatives and submissions;
  • Deliver a detailed final report outlining quantitative and qualitative data pertaining to your role in ARTSIDEOUT

 

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and organizational skills are required
  • Time-management abilities and an independent work ethic are important in the success of this role
  • Experience in having a ASO volunteer position is as asset, but not required
  • Experience in event planning and/or organization is an asset, but not required
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as work with others in a team-based setting
  • Demonstrated strong interest/eagerness to work with people from various walks of life, and learn about Scarborough’s rich and diverse arts and culture scene

 

Working Conditions

  • Work contract: February 2018 to end of October 2018
  • February to August will consist of monthly team meetings and socials; September will consist of weekly meetings up to the day of ARTSIDEOUT; Additional meetings with other departments and Artistic Director
  • Expected to attend executive workshops including, but not limited to: Financial Literacy, Intro to Google Accounts, Anti-Oppression Workshops
  • Expected to attend at least 3 Outreach events throughout the year
  • Work-from-home with hours between 4-5 hours/week
  • Availability during summer months is highly important
  • Flexible availability during September to the day of the festival is mandatory
